The AMA statement against Home Birth and their description of Nurse Midwives as fickle allies concerns me on many levels. While Home Birth is not for everyone we cannot lose our right to choose where and how we birth our babies. I for one do not do Home Births at this time but certainly believe that it is your choice. I provide services to women in hospital on the Birth Center Model of care and resent any attempts to change my practice style. I do not believe that women need all of the medical interventions that hospitals are forcing on more and more women. Women were designed to have babies without Epidurals, IV's and Episiotomies and they should not be subjected to these interventions without cause. Although I am probably preaching to the choir but I had to say it. |

Reply with quote | #2 | as an RN that started my career as a doula, educator and then a birth center RN.. that now works in the hospital environment for the passed 6 years.. i feel you on this one. we are in a crisis situation when it comes to the acceptance of midwifery as an educated decision for care.. i have been sitting on the fence as to whether i should continue my education to get my CNM at this point, because a large quantity of the OB's are not renewing contracts because of the outrageous malpractice insurance rates.. i can't imagine what it is like for you, fighting the good fight.. there needs to be a change.. and it needs to happen now. women deserve the support.. babies deserve peaceful beginnings.. midwives deserve to practice their art and trust their intuition without society dictating or monopolizing something as beautifully simple as birthing..
